EVALUATION ACTIVITY 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Real movie products usually attract their audiences using public advertisements to catch their attention about their film for instance, trailers, posters, merchandising etc. Especially Holly Films that tend to have a bigger budget to spend on the distribution of the film.

This is the poster for the marketing campaign I devised...

Here I created a poster using the program Fireworks. I researched posters from real movie products, particularly with movies in the thriller genre. Then I incorporated these ideas into my own design. If our movie were to be released, then I think that our poster would look something like this.

I think that posters and visual advertisements are very successful in attracting a specific target audience...
  • It intrigues them
  • Catches their attention
  • Makes them excited to see the film
  • Can make them share the movie with other people
  • Create anticipation for the movie release
  • Can make them research more into the film (i.e. visit websites, watch interviews)
Example of thriller posters that inspired mine...

Conventions Of A Thriller:
  • Tension and Suspense
  • A villain and a hero
  • Twists and turns - devices used to keep audience guessing
  • Red herrings - misleading the audience with information
  • Big locations
  • Cliffhangers
  • Trick endings
  • Thrilling to audience
  • Clues pointing to the ending
It is difficult to apply all of these conventions in just the opening, because of the duration and also, it would be too much for just the beginning of the film. We wanted our opening not to have clues pointing to the ending just yet, because we wanted our audience to stay curious and feel intrigued to watch the rest of the film and therefore did not give much information away.

Evaluation Activity 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I find that our thriller opening would be more suitable to a younger generation from young teenagers to adults. From my research on audience film experiences, I found that more younger people enjoy watching thriller films...

The gender variation for thriller films are approximately equal. Therefore, I believe that our film would be appropriate for a male and female audience at a younger generation.

I think that it may not be appropriate for an older generation as older people do not tend to go for thriller films. This is probably due to the conventions that are seen in the film...
- Loud music that adds tension
- Fast paced action at times
- Disturbing events and situations
- Shocking climax's throughout the film
- Scenes that make the audience 'jump'.

Also, it may not be appropriate for viewers that are too young. Small children tend to not be interested in the thriller genre. This is probably also due to the conventions...
- Antagonist - could scare children, may not enjoy film as an older audience would.
- 'Jumping' scenes may not be appropriate for young viewers.
- Disturbing events
- Plot line is aimed at an older audience

Therefore, I think that our opening could possibly be at a rating of a 15.

TARGET AUDIENCE

I think that these people would want to watch our film and would probably form an audience for our thriller. I found that more people at a teenage age enjoy the thriller genre in films a lot more. Therefore I think our film would appeal to audiences between the ages 15 and above.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

MY COMMENTARY

Here in my own director's commentary, I talked about why we included the various logos and titles within our film. And also, why each title is essential to the production of the film. Also, I compared some real movie production companies to our film and how we could create a mass audience to view it using distribution.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

CHARACTER 1 - FIRST CHARACTER INTRODUCED

ANTAGONIST- 'unknown'

Antagonist is first introduced...

- Gives the audience the sense of what genre the film is
 - The introduction of a villain gives suspense

- Black hoodie

connotations: young, teenager, youth, trouble, danger

Camera angle at the point-of-view of the villain. Gives the audience a sense of discomfort as they watch the protagonist from the perspective of the antagonist.

The face is never revealed - intrigues the audience - makes them want to watch more of the film. Conforms to a thriller genre.

  • Our antagonist was specifically chosen to be a female character. It adds a sense of mystery and dominance to the character as the victim is also a female.
  • A female character is not usually used for this type of role and therefore makes it different to other thrillers and intrigues the audience. It also adds a sense of mystery as the protagonist and antagonist are both female.

Can be compared to...

The Women in Black

The scene we used for our own opening could be compared with a scene from the film 'The Woman in Black' where an establishing shot of the house could result in the audience feeling uncomfortable due to its colors and the way it's being presented to the audience.

Contrast of light outside and dark inside the room, showing the significance and the huge and major difference of the different settings of both the characters.

Protagonist shown from the perspective of the villain - being watched gives a feeling of discomfort and unease to audience conforms to the thriller genre

Costume comparisons:
Representations of characters

Our character is a typical teenage girl...

Since our protagonist is a white female, it adds that sense of innocence and the clothes highlight her femininity as she is slim, well-groomed and girly.

The costume conforms to a female character very well. It highlights her as being young, pretty and fashionable female protagonist, like the characters in these photographs from real movie products (eg, LOL and Pitch Perfect, The Call).
