Evaluation 4- Natalia

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience member would shop in places such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters and perhaps American Apparel. Their preferred music of genre would vary from indie alternative to punk rock which would consist of bands such as Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Wombats or Dire Straits. Some of their favourite programmes / series would be Geordie Shore, Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black and Vampire Diaries. This information was collected by asking females aged between 17-20 about what they're favourite things to do are.

After producing a survey on Survey Monkey I found out what kind of target audience we would have, in terms of age and likes / dislikes. I did this by asking questions such as 'what is your age group?', 'what is your favourite genre of film?'. From these type of questions I got to find out what kind of audience we would have to produce our opening for and this made it easier to plan our costumes for the characters in the opening. So from my results I found that our audience will be teenage girls between 17-20 years old so therefore the film certificate will be a 15, due to small use of bad language. The things you would expect in rated 15 film would consist of: strong violence, bad language and perhaps portrayals of sexual behaviour.

Other films which are similar to ours are Sinister, The Call and Sixteen this is in terms of budget, location and our concept. We used the idea of a vulnerable girl from The Call where Casey (the protagonist) gets kidnapped by a male antagonist at the car park after she did some shopping with her friend. I feel that this idea of a young and trendy girl who gets kidnapped really appeals to our target audience, from personal experience I really got into this film because I knew that the protagonist was young and so I felt passionate about making sure that the police would find her, therefore I thought it would be effective to use a young and trendy character in our film to help to attract our target audience.

The idea of the flash backs from a film camera came from Sinister whereby a murdered kidnaps children and forces them to kill their families and film this happening. In our opening we used the black and white scenes to represent flash backs of when the antagonists was in the girls house to build a mysterious atmosphere. I feel like Sinister would appeal to my age demographic / targeted audience because it is very hard to watch a young child's family suffer and I feel like a lot of teenagers nowadays are very family orientated and therefore in a film like this teenagers would be immersed in the film, I found this out through personal experience whereby I watched the film with my friends and we all had similar reactions to the film.

My group and I targeted our audience through many different conventions of a thriller, personally I think our main attraction was the mise-en-scene, this is because our costume and setting was used appropriately to attract teenage girls aged between 17-20 years old. Our use of trendy costume of the protagonist enabled our targeted audience to relate to the character as well as the location of the protagonist, as she makes her way home unaware of the fact that the antagonist is in her home. Our use of point of view shots from the protagonist also enables our targeted audience to immerse themselves and almost put themselves in the shoes of the protagonist, this is also effective through the use of costume and location which helps the audience to relate to the character. When the targeted audience becomes immersed in the opening they find it easier to follow and become more interested to find out more about both the protagonist and the antagonist. The constant jump cuts between the protagonist walking home and the antagonist rummaging through her things builds tension and the music is effective in producing an eerie atmosphere.
