Evaluation 7- Natalia and Katie

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation 6- Natalia

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

On the Apple Macs we used Final Cut pro to edit our final product, as well as this I edited my preliminary task and other videos in which I answer questions or I explain new ideas. My knowledge of Final Cut Pro has improved greatly as I have experimented with it many times since I made my preliminary video. This was a very positive effect because by the time we got to editing our final product I felt very confident using the programme and it made editing and importing music a lot easier for myself personally.

The strengths and weaknesses of using the camera (Canon DSLR 650 eos) are that we took some brilliant shots and we were able to show the contrast between the two characters by using the camera only. However the weakness is that although we used white-balance on the camera, the image was still really washed out and white because it was very bright outside on the day that we fiilmed, however we were able to overcome this
problem when editing on Final Cut Pro.

I feel that our biggest problem in terms of the production process was the brightness outside, however through the continuous use of final cut pro I was able to learn how to edit the clip to reduce the brightness of the video so that the quality came out better.

Another strength of using the camera is that the recording quality was amazing however the audio quality was poor because it is built in to the camera. To overcome this problem we were given a microphone, which is also known as a 'dead rabbit'. However we chose to not use any dialogue in our opening and therefore we did not come across any issues with the audio quality.

Some of the programmes which I used in the making of our final product were: YouTube, Prezi, SlideShare and Blogger etc.

Using these programmes has allowed me to learn a lot about real media products / programmes. Not only did it help me with my media work, I will now also be able to use these programmes in the future for other reasons as I feel confident using all of these technologies.

Final Cut Pro enhanced our thriller a lot in my opinion because through that editing software we were able to add music, sound effects, titles and to reduce the brightness of the image. This in my opinion was the only area of equipment to help us with our product the most as we filmed outside in the sunlight therefore the torch was not necessary as well as the microphone as we did not use any audio.
This was also the most useful area of our overall mise-en-scene because in my opinion the contrast between  both of the characters was the most important section of our opening and therefore we had to make sure that the brightness and quality of our image was perfect to make this contrast very obvious to the audience.

Evaluation 5- Natalia

How did you attract / address your audience?

(Prezi made on Katie Jenkins account as my prezi account was not working)

I made this poster to attract my targeted audience. I thought that by posting the cast list at the top the audience would be more likely to become interested in our opening. After researching other film posters I learnt that they all have the age rating on them to inform the viewers of what content it consists of.

I think that the use of both characters in the poster create an eerie contrast between the two which would intrigue the audience to watch the film and find out who they both are.

Evaluation 4- Natalia

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience member would shop in places such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters and perhaps American Apparel. Their preferred music of genre would vary from indie alternative to punk rock which would consist of bands such as Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Wombats or Dire Straits. Some of their favourite programmes / series would be Geordie Shore, Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black and Vampire Diaries. This information was collected by asking females aged between 17-20 about what they're favourite things to do are.

After producing a survey on Survey Monkey I found out what kind of target audience we would have, in terms of age and likes / dislikes. I did this by asking questions such as 'what is your age group?', 'what is your favourite genre of film?'. From these type of questions I got to find out what kind of audience we would have to produce our opening for and this made it easier to plan our costumes for the characters in the opening. So from my results I found that our audience will be teenage girls between 17-20 years old so therefore the film certificate will be a 15, due to small use of bad language. The things you would expect in rated 15 film would consist of: strong violence, bad language and perhaps portrayals of sexual behaviour.

Other films which are similar to ours are Sinister, The Call and Sixteen this is in terms of budget, location and our concept. We used the idea of a vulnerable girl from The Call where Casey (the protagonist) gets kidnapped by a male antagonist at the car park after she did some shopping with her friend. I feel that this idea of a young and trendy girl who gets kidnapped really appeals to our target audience, from personal experience I really got into this film because I knew that the protagonist was young and so I felt passionate about making sure that the police would find her, therefore I thought it would be effective to use a young and trendy character in our film to help to attract our target audience.

The idea of the flash backs from a film camera came from Sinister whereby a murdered kidnaps children and forces them to kill their families and film this happening. In our opening we used the black and white scenes to represent flash backs of when the antagonists was in the girls house to build a mysterious atmosphere. I feel like Sinister would appeal to my age demographic / targeted audience because it is very hard to watch a young child's family suffer and I feel like a lot of teenagers nowadays are very family orientated and therefore in a film like this teenagers would be immersed in the film, I found this out through personal experience whereby I watched the film with my friends and we all had similar reactions to the film.

My group and I targeted our audience through many different conventions of a thriller, personally I think our main attraction was the mise-en-scene, this is because our costume and setting was used appropriately to attract teenage girls aged between 17-20 years old. Our use of trendy costume of the protagonist enabled our targeted audience to relate to the character as well as the location of the protagonist, as she makes her way home unaware of the fact that the antagonist is in her home. Our use of point of view shots from the protagonist also enables our targeted audience to immerse themselves and almost put themselves in the shoes of the protagonist, this is also effective through the use of costume and location which helps the audience to relate to the character. When the targeted audience becomes immersed in the opening they find it easier to follow and become more interested to find out more about both the protagonist and the antagonist. The constant jump cuts between the protagonist walking home and the antagonist rummaging through her things builds tension and the music is effective in producing an eerie atmosphere.

Evaluation 3- Natalia

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation 2- Natalia

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

We decided to compare the protagonist from our opening to the character called Casey, from the film 'The Call'. A girl in her late teens who also gets followed by a mysterious and psychotic, male character.

The protagonist from our opening is dressed in trendy costume as is the female from The Call. This represents the social group of teenage girls, she's coming home on a normal day not expecting what will happen soon, similarly to Casey in The Call who's walking through a car park after having done some shopping, soon after she gets kidnapped. We are able to present the age of our protagonist using costume of brightly coloured clothes and some sun glasses. This also creates a contrast between the protagonist and the antagonist.

The antagonist is dressed in all black covering her face. The use of a female character as the antagonist is to avoid creating something cliché, whereby the antagonist is usually an older male.

Through the use of costume and characters I think we were able to attract our targeted audience as I feel like female viewers aged between 17-20 years old, could almost picture themselves walking home and minding their own business. The fact that the costume consists of new and trendy clothes, the female demographic would be able to relate to the protagonist a lot more, therefore making them become more immersed in our opening. Our protagonist is playing a female character who is in her late teens, the costume we decided to use was to create a realistic feel to our opening, which would keep our audience eager to watch.

Although the antagonist is dressed in all black and covering her face it is obvious that she is a female however is not revealing her identity.

As the antagonist is another young female character, we are not conforming to the stereotype of a thriller and it would make the audience question as to what happened between the two characters to force the antagonist to break into the other females home and rummage through her items violently, in distress.

Overall our product is successful in representing a particular social group in which our targeted audience can relate to greatly.

Evaluation 1- Natalia

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?

Our final product of an opening to a thriller film conformed to the conventions and forms or real media products in many ways, this 9 frame title sequence of our media product gives a brief idea of what my group and I cooperated into the opening in order for it to conform to the conventions of a real life media product, examples of this are our production and distribution companies 'Breeze-block Productions' and 'Clockwork Distributors'.

Production Logos:

My group and I created the production and distribution company logos presented on the right-hand side. Before we went onto creating them we were obliged to research other company names and logos, on the left-hand side you can see examples of real media products

What we noticed about how production companies are cooperated in real media products is that they are animated, like for example Dream Works. After attempting to create something similar, we decided that our production company will not involve any movement as it does with Dream Works whereby there is a close up to the character on the moon, instead we used the sound effect of a typewriter in the background to create a sort of mysterious beginning, this way the audience will be intrigued to know what this sound is and why can they hear it.

However a common trend which we noticed was that the name of the company usually matches the image it presents, for example Universal uses the universe, therefore we decided to create the 'Clockwork Distributors' using the image of a clock to conform to a real product. I thought this was a very realistic logo for a distribution company, as well as this the sound effect of the typewriter, which to some viewers could be interpreted as the sound of a clock ticking or an old camera filming, which also creates a mysterious atmosphere.

Title:

Our title 'DiSoRiEnTaTiOn' was decided as a group also to highlight the idea that our protagonist is confused, she is completely unaware of the antagonists presence in her house. She becomes frightened when she knows that somebody is in the house. The use of mixture of smaller and larger letters just adds to the feeling of being disorientated and confused as the protagonist is, this is to immerse the audience into our opening so that they understand how the protagonist must be feeling, as the characters are also young, our targeted audience which is the younger demographic will find it easier to relate to the film.

Our title of the film as well as the entire idea of the opening to the thriller has come from sections of the film 'Sinister' (2012).

Our title of the film comes at the beginning as my group and I decided to prevent it from looking like a trailer. I thought it was really effective in the way that the writing fades onto the screen in Sinister and we recreated this in our own opening as it, in our opinions, was a very successful way to begin a thriller. In terms of atmosphere, to the audience this title would in fact look very sinister, the actual name and the way it has been written on top of the clip in the background also adds to this sinister atmosphere which I thought was very effective. Our title came before any of the directors or the crew were credited so that the audience would instantly be aware of the name and they perhaps make assumptions of what our film could be about.

The Antagonist:

With the antagonist on the left-hand side, we decided to keep the characters face covered, like the antagonist of the 1979 film 'Stalker' (Tarkovsky). As a group we decided that it would be most effective if the antagonist face was covered as the audience would be more eager to find out who this person is and why they are in somebodies house, however, we decided to use a female character as opposed to a male character which would stereotypically be used in thrillers similar to our own like for example 'Stalker'. Personally I thought that this would make the opening a lot more interesting as it would open a door to interpretation of the opening by the audience. This would lead to questions such as "why is this girl in another girls house?" or "why is she raiding through her drawers?". The antagonist is also dressed in all black, we noticed that in the film Stalker the antagonist in the picture on the right-hand side is also covered by shadow using lighting, we interpreted this by using costume. Overall this was effective as it made the character more mysterious, although the character may not look dangerous, it raises the questions of "why are they present in this house?".

You can clearly see that both actors are playing the role of young females, so perhaps the audience would be thinking about what happened between the two in the past to make the antagonist act in the way that she did.

Constant shots of the antagonist from behind and the effect of the hand-help camera makes the audience feel as though this is from their point of view and they are present at the scene, the fact that they are unaware of the appearance of the character they become more immersed in the opening.

The rest of the shots of the antagonist also follow this trend of it being a point of view shot of the audience member, this keeps the mysterious atmosphere, in which the pace increases as the antagonist trashes the room looking for items as the protagonist is getting closer to her home.

The Protagonist:

The protagonist is mainly only seen walking home or performing ordinary actions such as looking through the mail. The characters entire body is visible, her clothes are very bright and she looks very casual. This is the complete opposite to the antagonist who is dressed in all black and therefore this creates the contrast between the two locations: the protagonists house and the road on which she is walking home.
The contrast between the two scenes builds a faster pace as there a jump-cuts between both scenes, this in my opinion keeps the audience interested to find out what's going on. As the protagonist gets closer and closer to the house, the tension really begins to build and the pace increases which can really immerse the audience into our opening. The protagonist and the antagonist are the only two characters to be introduced in our opening in which their names appear within the credits of the opening. The actors names appear after the directors during the scenes which they are seen in so that the audience is aware of who is who. The font which the credits and the title are presented in is the same throughout, we used this as it was the most similar to the film Sinister. This type of font is effective because it makes it clear to the audience what genre this film will be, the way that the credits fade onto the screen is very eerie too which helpful in terms of creating an atmosphere.

Camera-work:

In the shot where the protagonist is reaching her house, we also interpreted the idea from the film Sinister, at this point the pace is very quick as the protagonist is almost in the house and the antagonist knows that she does not have much time to be in the house, hence the reason her movement is very rapid and violent.

The point of view shot from the protagonist again can immerse the audience into the opening as they are metaphorically reaching the house with the protagonist however they are aware that the antagonist is in there and therefore the audience will be eager to know what will happen once the protagonist reaches the house.

Sound:

The idea of the use of the sound effect of a typewriter was also used from Sinister, this sound of a typewriter can be interpreted as film tape, which is how my group and I imagined it. This is an example of one of the non-diegetic sounds which we decided to use in our opening, this is sound which only the audience can hear. Another example of non-diegetic sound which we decided to use begins playing as the title fades onto the screen, this created a lot of tension as soon as the opening began. The music used was produced by a woman playing on a water-phone, this instrument is used in the background of a lot of horror and thrillers.

We also have many diegetic sounds within our opening which are sounds that both the characters in the opening and the audience can hear. These are sounds such as the wind blowing or the birds chirping. These sounds can make the audience feel as though they are a part of the opening, therefore making it a lot more realistic to the viewer.

3 - Point Lighting

In this video we experimented with the 3 - point lighting to see what each individual light would look like if we were to try and use it in our final opening to a thriller film.

Our Risk Assessment

Our personal risk assessment for our thriller opening:

We are filming our thriller in on the bus first, therefore we need to be cautious of:

  • The public - we will have to alert the public that we are filming
  • The possibility of falling off the bus
  • Falling over when the bus is moving fast
  • Something happening to the camera
  • People getting in the way of our shots

We will then be filming in Natalia's house and there we need to be cautious of:

  • Her dog, incase of tripping over when filming
  • The table edges
  • Broken glass - need to avoid any of us getting cut or hurt by the glass
  • Tripping over anything - need to move anything in the way of us
  • Tripping over her cat
  • Falling up or down the stairs
  • Dropping the camera

Logo by Natalia Compa

For the moment, this is my idea for a production company logo. I like the background the way it looks like paint which has been mixed carelessly, this would link to our idea to our opening to a thriller as it creates the feel of distortion and confusion which is the idea that we're trying to get across in our opening. The breeze blocks comes from an artist, however I think this is also quite effective in creating an atmosphere for our opening as with breeze blocks you would imagine something cold and dull which is also the base of our opening.

Example of a risk assessment Natalia Compa

INTRODUCTION

There are many health and safety aspects that our group will need to consider when filming as we may put ourselves in danger whilst filming some scenes of our opening to a thriller. For example if we decide to film a fight scene we will have to stage it so that nobody really gets hurt in the actual thing.

Here is a website showing what kind of things we will need to be aware of when filming our opening:

The Revenant (Alejandro, 2016) Trailer

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FoCxFjEkdPg

I decided to show the trailer to The Revenant (Alejandro, 2016) as the opening was not available on legal websites. The reason why I picked this film was because I had already seen it soon after it was released and I really enjoyed it, I thought the film was amazing and I wanted to see how two other media students would react to the trailer, one who had seen the film and one who had not. I think this film was very fast-paced and interesting, even from the trailer you could get an insight to what the film would be. I got good responses to the trailer as well as the questions I composed to go with the trailer.

Mini Pitch Evaluation: New Idea First Draft

Title: Bystander

Our new idea will also be based at a teenagers house party, instead of it being based on the main characters doing drugs, one of the friends will go upstairs to find the bathroom, when he gets upstairs he sees something that he shouldn't have seen. As he makes his way up he can see a group of dangerous looking teenage boys pulling another boy into a room and quickly shutting the door, before he could hear the boys screaming "Shut up and stay put", just before the door slammed shot one of the bullies saw the bystander watching in disbelief, although he was aware that they were being watched they continued to scare the victim. This was followed by continuous screaming and threatening. The bystander walks away without saying a word. A half an hour passed until one of the bullies left the room and began searching for the bystander.

Profile Natalia Compa

General Survey Results / Mini Pitch Natalia Compa

The results that I have obtained from my survey have shown me that the majority of 17-20 year old's enjoy action / adventure films and they are all mainly informed about films through trailers. Everyone agreed that the storyline stand out the most in thrillers and that the credits are not too important. In their opinions, music creates the most suspense in thrillers and the best way to start a thriller is with flashbacks, while some others chose action. Majority said that an introduction to characters is not too important in the opening.

I will be creating an idea for an opening to a thriller based on the results from the survey which I composed, aiming to create something for an audience aged between 17-20, as the majority agreed that a thriller based on psychological issues would appeal to them the most, with teenagers and drugs coming up second; I merged the two together and came up with the storyline.

Title: psycho-teen
A group of about 5 teenagers, aged 17 and located in London had come across drugs for the first time at a festival about 6 months before where they are now (as the opening will be based on current time) their experience was frightening though magical at the same time. Since then these teenagers have taken many more drugs, and it is gradually becoming a regular thing for this group, this introduction has brought many arguments and anti-social behaviour to this group who were quite civil before. As some have fallen out, others left the friendship group while the rest were being taken over by drugs. They've encountered many problems on the way with parents, police and drug dealers. On a few occasions the use of drugs became slightly out of hand and the teenagers were not taking it too well, with violence and sickness. Eventually one girl ended up in hospital, with serious injuries and was strapped up to life support, at this point they owed some people money which carried on building up. This left the rest of the group in a lot of danger, the drugs began to eat into their minds and they became very delusional however they never stopped taking drugs. People started to notice their behaviour and informed their parents and police about it, the teenagers could not take control of their own bodies. One evening they decided to go to an abandoned building, the police became aware of their location, of course they were doing drugs. It became silent and very suspicious until the police broke in, the teenagers made a run for it into a forest. They had used a large amount of drugs, became unaware of their surroundings. They found themselves in cells the next morning.

Visuals:
Most filming will be located around London, and it's outskirts showing the contrast between the two. I want to capture the busy life that Central London creates. But I also want to capture the hidden areas of London that aren't so popular, where the teenagers are hanging out. E.g. parks
Lighting will vary throughout, during actions scenes, lighting will be low-key to create suspense and an eerie atmosphere, whereas scenes during the day there will be natural lighting and during the night it will be dark with artificial lights (e.g. lampposts) to show a contrast between London at night and day.
Costume will be quite basic to start off with, jeans and tees. As the opening progresses costume might become more revealing as the teens take more drugs and become more violent and misbehaved.
Make-up on females will work similarly to costume, normal day make up at the beginning, as it progresses darker and more make up will be used e.g. dark lipstick and dark eye make up
As introduction to characters is less important to audience, we will focus more so on camera shots and angles rather than specifically filming the actors and their lives.
Close ups on teenagers to show difference between how they start and finish, to show differences in make up and facial expressions. Special FX make up will be used to create more believable wounds.
Within editing there will be many jump cuts especially during the action scenes to increase the pace and intensity of the film, almost building up to a climax.
In terms of music we will use tracks which are popular within the audiences who will be watching our opening do that they can become more immersed in our opening, these tracks will play quietly under the action or the dialogue, the audience will be able to relate to our opening and will enjoy watching as they would be eager to find out more.
Sounds effects of police sirens may be used to help create more believable crime scenes.

Survey Monkey

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SC2LMPL

I have created a survey using www.surveymonkey.co.uk in order to find out everything that I need to know audiences for thrillers. I composed questions which were best suited for gathering the information which is vital in order to create an opening to a thriller, the answers will hopefully inform me about which aspects are most important within thrillers, whether these are the characters, props and location OR music, sound effects and lighting etc.

The top five films under 'The Oscars' on the IMDb website are all 'drama' based films, with Argo (2012) having a thriller element to it also, proves that the most popular films are thrillers, action and drama based as in my opinion audiences are most focused and interested in films which are fast-paced and action packed, but ones that a full of information too, so that we are fully immersed and completely understand what is going on at all times. This tells me that for our target audience (people aged 14-23) my group and I should aim to create something fairly action packed so that our audience can almost relate to our opening and also so that they can enjoy it.
